MALCOLM X COLLEGE is accredited by Malcolm X College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, is a comprehensive community college.
The mission of the college establishes the philosophical parameters within which the institution will strive to empower each individual to be all he or she is capable of becoming. Its unique history establishes its moral and ethical commitment to provide diverse experiences designed to enhance educational development and cultural enrichment. The learning experiences provided by the college are designed to maximize communication skills, to strengthen critical thinking, to foster analytical skills development, to provide adult and post-secondary education that promotes and supports transfer to a senior educational institution or direct entry into the workforce, to inspire awareness of history, to foster cultural pride and identity, and to form a basis for responsible citizenship.
Founded in 1911, Malcolm X College has a rich and varied history reflective of the diverse communities it serves. Being the first of the City Colleges of Chicago, it was then named Herzl Junior College and later renamed Crane Junior College. In 1969, at the request of community residents, the name was changed to Malcolm X College.
Malcolm X College offers pre-Baccalaureate/Transfer programs for students who intend to go on to four-year degree-granting colleges and universities. Malcolm X College features an interactive telecommunications center, an innovative Academic Support Center which includes a Personalized Curriculum Institute, a computer training center, a modern word processing center, well equipped Chemistry and Biology laboratories and the city's finest comprehensive allied health science laboratories.
An extensive Continuing Education and Community Service program is offered through a flexible delivery system for adults 18 years and older regardless of their educational backgrounds. More than 600 courses have been approved for Continuing Education. Noncredit courses, workshops, symposia and forums are among programs offered in concert with and for hundreds of community agencies and organizations. General Studies courses, the name applied to Continuing Education classes, are approved by the Illinois Community College Board. In addition to individual classes and workshops, Certificate Programs are offered at the Malcolm X College West Side Learning Center. The Business & Industry Services Division provides economic development services and special programs and courses can be specifically designed to meet the needs of companies/businesses through contract training.
Through Continuing Education offerings, new skills can be acquired, existing skills can be enhanced and additional areas of interest can be explored in a professional learning environment.
