The University of Texas at San Antonio is the city's only public university and serves more than 18,600 students. Established in 1969, UTSA is the state's fastest growing institution of higher learning and features three campus locations.
UTSA's 1604 Campus which borders the Texas Hill Country, was constructed in 1972. At that time, the 600-acre campus was the largest new university under construction in the United States. The campus focal point is a central courtyard with a covered plaza, reminiscent of an Italian village. Now the campus has grown to include 14 buildings, on-campus housing, athletic facilities, an Art Gallery and distance learning facilities. Three new buildings are in the planning stages and include a new Academic Building, Biotechnology Building and a Wellness and Recreation Facility.
The UTSA Downtown Campus is a full-service educational institution located in the heart of San Antonio at the intersection of Durango Boulevard and Frio Street. With two major buildings and a third under construction, the Downtown Campus is home to a growing population of more than 3,100 students. Classes were first held in the Frio Street Building in July 1997. UTSA's Downtown Campus offers 18 on-site degree programs and features a 19,000 square foot library, a 150 seat computer lab and a professional quality theater.
The Institute of Texan Cultures is dedicated to enhancing the understanding of the history of the diverse cultures in Texas. The Institute first opened its doors in 1968 as the Texas Pavilion during the six-month HemisFair celebration. Now, an integral part of UTSA, the Institute welcomes more than 300,000 visitors a year to its exhibit floor, which contains more than 50,000 square feet of exhibits about the many ethnic and cultural groups that settled Texas.
