Basic CompTIA A Certification PrepTime to roll up those sleeves and dive inside the personal computer! The Basic CompTIA A+ Certification Prep course teaches you about the hardware common to virtually every personal computer, including microprocessors, RAM, power supplies, motherboards, BIOS, CMOS, the expansion bus, and input/output devices. You値l learn how things work, how to configure everything, and how to troubleshoot in real world environments. This course gives you the knowledge upon which you値l base the rest of your CompTIA A+ certification studies for the exams that debuted in late 2006. Plus it helps you take that first step to becoming an excellent PC technician. So what are you waiting for?!?

This course includes a knowledgeable and caring instructor who will guide you through your lessons, facilitate discussions, and answer your questions. The instructor for this course will be Scott Jernigan.

With a Master of Arts degree in Medieval History, Scott Jernigan feels as much at home in the musty archives of London as he does in the warm glow of a computer monitor. Scott teaches A+ Certification and PC hardware classes around the country, including several stints at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, Lucent Technologies in Baltimore, MD, and the United Nations in New York City. Scott has also edited numerous computer books, including the best-selling "All in One A+ Certification Exam Guide" and the "Network+ Certification Exam Guide" from McGraw-Hill. Practicing what he teaches, Scott is an A+ and Network+ Certified Technician.

Requirements:

A solid conceptual and practical knowledge of Windows 2000 or XP and preferably some experience with Windows 98 or ME; Internet access, e-mail, the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox Web browser, and the Adobe Flash and PDF plug-ins (two free and simple downloads you obtain at http://www.adobe.com/downloads by clicking Get Adobe Flash Player and Get Adobe Reader).

It's also recommended that you have a PC that you can take apart and put back together again. This can be anything from an ancient Intel 286 to a newer 486 or beyond. Because of the dangers of electro-static discharge (to the machine, not the student), we do not require you to tear apart your own primary computer. This is, however, a class that trains you to be a hardware technician - having a machine to play with greatly helps your learning.

Syllabus:

All courses run for six weeks, with a two-week grace period at the end. Two lessons are released each week for the six-week duration of the course. You do not have to be present when the lesson is released, but you must complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

A new section of each course starts on the second or third Wednesday of each month. If enrolling in a series of two or more courses, please be sure to space the start date for each course at least two months apart.

Student Reviews:

  • "Excellent course. I have been working with PCs and "pre-PCs" since 1980. I was not sure how useful this course would be to me. I was pleasantly surprised - I feel I have enhanced my knowledge and look forward to more advanced A+ courses. However the quizzes could be longer and somewhat more difficult. Great Job Scott!"
  • "From a complete beginner standpoint--an excellent way to step into the subject--material presented is clear and reinforced. Discussion areas were entertaining and informative, especially the reports covering the lab computer assignments. Learned some basics(will never forget) and know exactly which lessons need further review/study! Enjoyed the course!"
  • "I have been tweaking computers on my own for the past eight years;learning as I go. The knowledge I gained through this class was invaluable. The lesson assignments were right on target. The information was clear and precise. I am anticipating the Intermediate course with fervent optimism."
  • "Instructor has a very charming pleasant attitude with a great sense of humor. He is a good writer. And he is responsive and helpful. :)"
  • "I really love the writing style of my instructor! He makes it so easy to understand things - even if you are somewhat new to computers!"
  • "I thoroughly enjoyed this course and the wit of Scott. Being more of the programmer than the tech, this course offered insights into the tech terms I have often heard but was not able to put a 'name to the face'. Thank you for making it simpler to understand."
  • "The class was outstanding and Scott is a wonderful instructor. I look forward to continuing the online classes and I will tell everyone I know how great and user friendly the online classes are to those who choose to use them! Thanks for the opportunity!"
  • "The lectures were extremely well written and easy to understand. I commend the instructor on both the material oranization and his writing style."
  • "This course is the first I have come to know "HOW" it all comes together. Wish I'd done this a long time ago. The course would benefit anyone that is half way technically inclined or just curious, and has a PC at home to maintain."
  • "This was my third online computer course and I think it was the best course as far as material presented and exactly what I was looking for in understanding computer operations."
