Pain assessment and management is a crucial part of compassionate and effective patient care. Many providers, patients, patients' families, and regulatory agencies are requiring health care providers to be more accurate with their pain assessment skills and more effective in their pain management strategies. Scientific advancements in the understanding of the mechanisms of pain, multidisciplinary methods of assessment and management, and the improvement of medications to treat pain have contributed to the wealth of knowledge in this area.

Participants

This certificate program is targeted toward nurses of all levels (student nurses, registered nurses, licensed vocational or practical nurses, advance practice nurses, and nursing faculty) and in all positions (staff nurses and nurse administrators).

It is also relevant for nursing assistants, social workers, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, health care administrators, personal care assistants, and volunteers.


Curriculum

The Certificate in Pain Assessment and Management program includes 6 courses, each 4 contact hours in length, for a total of 24 contact hours.

  1. Pain Theory and Assessment Principles

  2. Interventions and Treatment of Pain

  3. Pain Management in the Adult: Acute and Chronic Pain

  4. Pain Management in Special Populations: Children and the Elderly

  5. Pain Management in Special Populations: Surgery, Cancer, and HIV

  6. Treatment of Pain at the End of Life


Accreditation

ALLEGRA Learning Solutions, LLC is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Accreditation refers to recognition of continuing nursing education only and does not imply Commission on Accreditation approval or endorsement of any commercial product.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP 14693, for the stated number of contact hours.

This course includes a knowledgeable and caring instructor who will guide you through your lessons, facilitate discussions, and answer your questions. The instructor for this course will be Cyndie Koopsen and Caroline Young.

Cyndie Koopsen, RN, MBA, HN-BC, is a nurse who has cared for patients in acute care settings, community clinics, and the home. Her professional nursing career has involved nursing executive leadership and administration, staff development and education, community education and wellness, and holistic care. She has designed, developed, and presented numerous educational programs for audiences covering integrative health, promotion and wellness, and chronic disease management and prevention. She is the co-author of Spirituality, Health, and Healing and Integrative Health: A Holistic Approach for Health Professionals.

Caroline Young, MPH, has an extensive public health background and includes experience in research, workshop presentations in various areas of health care, and online and onsite teaching. She has expertise in holistic community health and wellness program design, development, marketing, implementation, and evaluation. She has also designed, developed, and presented integrative health programs for culturally diverse populations, senior populations, and faith communities. She is the co-author of Spirituality, Health, and Healing and Integrative Health: A Holistic Approach for Health Professionals.
