Are you tired of being intimidated and manipulated by others?  Learn specific techniques to become more assertive in all parts of your life. Explore ways to change your inner dialogue, such as using affirmations and visualization to gain self-confidence. Master the skills that will empower you to talk in an assertive manner for a variety of situations. 

You will learn strategies for handling anger and criticism from others. Understand how to reinforce assertive statements through the use of facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and your own voice. Learn to speak with confidence to friends, bosses, co-workers and even total strangers..

Week 1

Begin by measuring your assertiveness quotient and learn to recognize the different behaviors of passive, aggressive and assertive people.  Then begin to look at why you have negative thoughts about yourself and find techniques for replacing them with a positive inner script through: visualization, affirmation storytelling, and more.

Week 2

Learn how to recognize ways you lose power through the use of certain types of language to either gain approval or avoid criticism, opposition or disagreement.  Discover some simple adjustments to the way you say things. Then learn to be verbally assertive through the use of I statements, responding to requests, asking for cooperation and support and confronting another person.  You’ll also learn to deal assertively with people who are angry with you or criticizing you.

Week 3

Learn how to use eye contact, facial expressions, voice, body posture, gait and clothes to create an assertive image.  Then discover four behavior types and five sensory types to help you understand which assertive approach works best.  Learn how to observe verbal and nonverbal clues to handle any resistance you may encounter.

Week 4

Discover how to most effectively respond to family members who manipulate you, and learn to build more positive relationships.  Then you will explore different relationships in partners and the problems that tend to arise.  Gain insight on how to treat each other differently in order to resolve problems in an assertive but loving manner.

Week 5

Do you have a hard time saying no to someone or find it difficult to converse in social situations? This lesson will give you techniques to deal with your friends in a calm and strong manner. You will learn to   open up to other people and carry on interesting conversations. Then learn how to be assertive during job interviews as well as with your boss and subordinates and how to advance assertiveness where you work.  

Week 6

Learn how to be assertive with waiters, salespeople, doctors, etc.  Discover how to be assertive in everyday situations.  Finally learn some situations in which it is better not to be assertive and how to give and receive compliments.

Vivian Harte has been teaching people how to be more assertive for more than 10 years. She teaches a "Women in Society" class for a large college, and also helps students at a major university learn how to express themselves assertively in the classroom and in the workplace.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
