Lesson 1: Six Sigma Introduction

Our first lesson will define Six Sigma and its relation to costs and efficiencies. We’ll learn about the application of Six Sigma and why it’s so popular, as well as make some comparisons between typical TQM and Six Sigma programs.

Lesson 2: How to Deploy Six Sigma

This lesson will cover best practices for deploying Six Sigma, including your leadership responsibilities and resource allocation. We’ll also cover data-driven decision-making and organizational metrics and dashboards.

Lesson 3: Six Sigma Projects

Lesson 3 will show you the ins and outs of choosing Six Sigma projects. You’ll discover project focus, project selection, and how to estimate project benefits. Then we’ll dive into an overview of DMAIC methodology and project reporting.

Lesson 4: Define Stage: Tools and Objectives

This lesson will discuss the tools and tasks required for effective definition of your project. You’ll explore the objectives of this stage in the process, and explore the use and development of project charters, which provide a means to control, manage, and approve Six Sigma projects.

Lesson 5: Define Stage: Metrics and Deliverables

In this lesson we’ll discuss various metrics and deliverables for the define stage, including critical to quality (CTQ) metrics and critical to schedule (CTS) metrics. Then we’ll explore the relation of CTQ and CTS metrics to critical to cost (CTC) metrics.

Lesson 6: Define Stage: Project Financials

We will now get into the subject of financials, an important consideration in the define stage. We’ll talk about the cost of poor quality and how to quantify project benefits. Then we’ll move onto the basics of CTC calculations.

Lesson 7: Define Stage: Project Scheduling

This lesson will teach you how to create the timeline for project milestones. You’ll learn to define a deterministic critical path, as well as one that assumes variation using a PERT approach. We’ll also learn about Gantt charts, which are often used to manage the project milestone dates.

Lesson 8: Define Stage: Change Management and Teams

This lesson discusses the methods for effectively achieving buy-in throughout the organization and forming and developing a successful project team. You’ll learn about problems that are likely to arise, how to build consensus, and all about team formation, rules, and responsibilities.

Lesson 9: Measure Stage: Tools and Objectives

In Lesson 9, we’ll first define the objects of the measure stage, including process definition, metric definition, establishing the process baseline, and evaluating the measurement system. Then we’ll learn how to use a control chart as a process baseline tool.

Lesson 10: Measure Stage: Probability and Distributions

In this lesson, you’ll explore the rules of probability, as well as Distribution Use and Interpretation in MS Excel and Minitab. We’ll go over probability plots, goodness of fit tests, and curve fitting with Johnson distributions.

Lesson 11: Measure Stage: X-Bar Charts

In Lesson 11, we’ll start by defining the uses, construction and calculations, and assumptions of X-bar charts. Then we’ll learn about rational subgroups and sampling considerations, and we’ll end the lesson by exploring how to interpret these charts.

Lesson 12: Measure Stage: Individuals Data

This lesson describes control charts for individual values, including construction, calculations, assumptions, sampling considerations, and interpretation. We’ll also compare this type of chart with the X-bar chart.

Lesson 13: Measure Stage: Process Capability

In this lesson we’ll discuss the proper use of histograms, capability indices, and performance indices. We’ll also learn about probability plots and goodness of fit tests.

Lesson 14: Measure Stage: Attribute Charts

Lesson 14 discusses the use of Attribute Control Charts and Pareto charts for analyzing count data. You’ll learn about how to select the appropriate type of chart to use, construction and calculations, sampling considerations, and chart interpretation.

Lesson 15: Measure Stage: Short Run SPC

In this lesson, you’ll learn about the use and interpretation of control charts modified for processes whose nominal values change frequently due to a variety of conditions, including short production runs or transaction types.

Lesson 16: Measure Stage: Measurement Systems Analysis

In our final lesson on the measure stage, we’ll talk about various methods for evaluating measurement systems, including stability studies, linearity analysis, and R&R analysis.

Lesson 17: Analyze Stage: Tools and Objectives

Now we’ll move on to the analyze stage. First we’ll analyze stage objectives, define waste, and review the analyzing process for NVA. We’ll end this lesson with a discussion of methods to increase velocity.

Lesson 18: Analyze Stage: Sources of Variation

This lesson will teach you all about statistical inference techniques for analyzing sources of variation. Our topics will include multi-vari plots, confidence intervals on mean and percent, hypothesis test on mean and on mean of two samples, power and sample size, contingency tables, and non-parametric tests.

Lesson 19: Analyze Stage: ANOVA

During our discussion of the use of ANOVA, we’ll review assumptions and Bartlett’s equality of variance test, as well as several methods of ANOVA in Excel and Minitab, including one-way, two-way, and multi-factor.

Lesson 20: Analyze Stage: Regression Analysis

In this lesson we will explore the use of scatter diagrams, ANOVA, and residuals analysis to investigate correlation between two variables. We will also discuss the notion of regression applied to multiple variables, especially in the use of designed experiments.

Lesson 21: Analyze Stage: Multiple Regression

This lesson is an extension of the regression topics covered in the previous lesson. We’ll learn about multivariate models, interaction plots, interpreting ANOVA tables, model considerations, stepwise regression, and residuals analysis.

Lesson 22: Analyze Stage: Introduction to Designed Experiments

Design of experiments (DOE) is an important part of the Six Sigma methodology. Here you’ll learn all the important terminology, plus compare DOE to traditional experiments and historical data. Then we’ll review design planning and specification as well as complete and fractional factorials.

Lesson 23: Analyze Stage: DOE Analysis Fundamentals

This lesson will teach you about the analysis of designed experiments, particularly the screening experiments used to analyze processes. You’ll discover how to estimate effects and coefficients, as well as explore significance plots, estimating error, extending designs, power of design, and lack of fit. We’ll end with a discussion on tests for surface curvature.

Lesson 24: Analyze Stage: Design Selection

In addition to the designs discussed previously, there are others that can often provide greater efficiency. Here we’ll talk about the properties of various desirable designs, how to evaluate designs for these properties, and how to evaluate a design’s performance.

Lesson 25: Analyze Stage: Transformations

The final lesson on the analyze stage discusses the use of data transformations. You’ll discover why we need them, and then learn about non-constant variance, Box-Cox transforms, calculated parameters, and Taguchi signal-to-noise ratios.

Lesson 26: Improve Stage: Tools and Objectives

In this lesson we will discuss the objectives and tools used in the improve stage of DMAIC. We’ll review all the tools at your disposal, including tools to prioritize improvement opportunities, define new process flow, and define and mitigate failure modes.

Lesson 27: Improve Stage: Response Surface Analysis

Response surface analysis (RSA) refers to techniques to determine the optimal value of the response. Here we’ll learn why we do it and how to apply it. Then we’ll move on to various examples, including the sequential technique and steepest ascent techniques.

Lesson 28: Improve Stage: Ridge Analysis

The purpose of ridge analysis is to locate an optimal condition within the experimental region. In this lesson we’ll learn about the graphical method, analytical method, overlaid contours, and desirability function.

Lesson 29: Improve Stage: Simulations

Simulations are used for studying dynamic situations, determining components and variables in complex systems, studying the effects of change, and frequently for teaching. In this lesson we’ll review applications and examples of this important tool, as well as applying probabilistic estimates.

Lesson 30: Improve Stage: Evolutionary Operation

The final lesson on the improve stage discusses evolutionary operation (EVOP), a method for slowly moving a process towards an optimal condition. You’ll learn all about its methodology, and we’ll show you examples and discuss the risks and advantages of this tool.

Lesson 31: Control Stage: Tools and Objectives

We’ll now move onto two lessons on the control stage, where we seek to maintain the improvements that have been implemented in the Improve stage. We’ll discuss methods of control and control plans, and learn how to measure improvement and apply lessons learned to enhance the financial return of the improvement process.

Lesson 32: Control Stage: Serial Correlation

The second lesson on the control stage discusses the problems with serial correlation in data and introduce remedies to address the issue. You’ll learn about various applications, and also how to estimate and interpret autocorrelation and use batch control charts.

Lesson 33: Design for Six Sigma Overview

Our last lesson is an overview of the techniques and tools that can be applied in Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). We’ll teach you about DMADV methodology, Taguchi robust designs, and axiomatic designs. You’ll be well on your way to a detailed understanding of these tools for DFSS deployment.

Paul Keller is a Senior Consultant with Quality America, Inc., where he has worked since 1992. Paul has developed and implemented many successful Six Sigma and quality improvement programs in service and manufacturing environments, including the automotive and aerospace industries. Paul specialized in Quality Engineering in the Master’s Program at the University of Arizona. He has authored and co-authored numerous books, including Six Sigma Demystified and Six Sigma Handbook (New York, McGraw-Hill). He has also written numerous articles for professional trade magazines and conference proceedings.

Six Sigma Black Belt Requirements / Prerequisites

Black Belt candidates generally have college degrees in industry-related fields, including business, engineering, or sciences. They are comfortable using mathematics, are experienced problem solvers, have college-level reading comprehension skills, and are proficient in using Windows-based computer software, including Microsoft Office and general statistical software packages. You should also have Excel 2010 or any more recent version of Excel in order to complete the program. This program is for you if you have the appropriate prerequisites and the desire to lead teams using the DMAIC methodology and advanced statistical tools. After completing this program, you will be eligible to work toward the International Quality Federation (IQF) certification, which is a Six Sigma industry standard certification. The IQF certification does not come through your accredited college or university; it is something you will need to work toward on your own. You will have the option to sit for the IQF certification exam at the end of your program without additional charge. A study guide for the IQF exam is included in your program registration materials, and the program itself prepares you for much of the knowledge you need for the IQF certification exam.

This program can be taken from either a Mac or a PC. It is compatible IE 7 and later browsers. To access this program and Study Guide, you need only a Web-enabled computer. Black Belts should also have a general statistical software package, such as Minitab, the Black Belt XL software provided with the course, or (at the least) a functional copy of MS Excel.

Can I register for programs if I am an international student?

Yes, because ed2go programs are online you never have to actually travel to the school. Most schools offer telephone or online registration.

How long does it take to complete a program?

All of our programs are self-paced and open-enrollment. You can start and finish the program at your own pace. When you register for a program, you're given six months to complete the program.

Can I get financial assistance?

What do I have to have in order to take an online program, and what are the system requirements?

In order to take our online programs, you must have access to a computer and the Internet (a normal dial-up connection will work, but high-speed Internet access is recommended). You can access the program contents from any Web-enabled computer. There are no necessary plug-ins. You don't have to use the same computer to log-in to the program every time. Can this program be taken on a Mac?

What if I don't have enough time to complete my program within the time frame provided?

The time allotted to complete your program has been calculated based on the number of hours for each program, so don't worry too much about not completing in time.
