Week 1

Get ready to start writing an app by learning four principles for designing great mobile apps, and getting  acquainted with the concept of "mobile first" Web development. Then set up your tools and get your hands dirty with some real HTML5 code.

Week 2

Find out why HTML5 is so important to mobile and web developers and how you can use it to write your own webpages. You’ll also learn to use CSS to format HTML documents which will make your web apps workable on the largest number of devices.

Week 3

Learn to use JavaScript to add interactivity to mobile apps. Then, use jQuery Mobile to make your HTML5 apps feel at home as well as JavaScript libraries and frameworks to get more done in less time.

Week 4

Learn how to use built-in device features such as offline storage and location services to make your mobile Web apps much more dynamic and web APIs to create mashups.

Week 5

Learn to optimize your graphics for the mobile Web and make your Web app look good on the largest possible variety of devices. You'll also add some meta tags that will give your app more polish on iPhone and Android.

Week 6

Learn tools and techniques to make your app responsive. And finally, you’ll learn how to use PhoneGap to convert your Web app into a native one for multiple mobile operating systems.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

All additional software needed for this course is freely available on the Internet and the steps for downloading and installing it will be covered during the lessons.

One of the following operating systems is required:

  • Windows XP or later
  • Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later
  • Linux

Note: HTML and/or programming experience will be helpful, but is not required.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
