This course, taught by a practicing veterinarian and college instructor, will give you the information you need to prepare for work in veterinary hospitals. Special lessons will target specific aspects of veterinary assistant duties.

Week 1

Learn how ancient veterinary medicine evolved into the modern-day practice that you're accustomed to. You will also learn all about dog and cat reproduction. Then, examine how often vaccines should be given, why they may be ill-advised, and why vaccinosis is so controversial.

Week 2

Explore how parasites infect pets and people, what they do, and how to prevent their invasion. Then, learn how to pick the best food for your pet and discuss the role of prescription diets in pet health.

Week 3

Learn what euthanasia entails, how to help a grieving client, and tools for assisting children with pet loss. Then, learn about the dangers associated with X-rays, anesthetics, and certain drugs. You will also get a glimpse into the cash flow of a typical veterinary hospital.

Week 4

Learn to cope with almost any emergency and discuss ways that some emergencies can be prevented. Then, learn all about fleas - the most common parasite affecting pets - and discover how they can be managed.

Week 5

Learn how to handle legal situations and how to maintain client confidentiality. Then, find out how to prepare prescriptions correctly and learn the veterinary assistant’s role in keeping accurate medical records. You will also learn about marketing strategies at the veterinary hospital.

Week 6

Learn all about alternative therapies that some veterinarians are applying in their practices, including acupuncture, homeopathy, herbs, chiropractic care, and home-cooked pet food. Finally, learn how best to train puppies and kittens, and more importantly, how to share the information with your clients.

Jeff Grognet has been a companion animal veterinarian for 25 years. He was a pioneer in the field of veterinary assistant teaching, developing his first course almost 20 years ago. The overwhelming success of his veterinary receptionist/assistant college courses led him to expand his teaching into other areas in high demand, including pet first aid and alternative medical therapies for companion animals. He practices with his wife at a Veterinary Hospital in BC, Canada. Jeff has published a large and diverse number of articles and is a regular contributing author to several magazines.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
