Easy English 1

Do you need to learn English—and learn it fast? If so, this is the course for you! 

Don't worry if you don't know a lot of English. In these lessons, you'll start with the basics and build your skills step-by-step. Fun activities and games will help you learn the English you need for real-life situations including shopping for clothes and food, job-hunting, and finding a place to live. You'll also learn key words and phrases you can use at school or in social settings, and you'll know the right things to say in a medical emergency.

You'll build grammar and vocabulary skills step-by-step as you go through the course. You'll also improve your listening skills through audio and video activities. By the time you're done, you'll have the skills you need to speak basic English with confidence.

Easy English 1 Outline

Week 1

Learn how to give personal information, describe people, talk about family relationships, and express preferences. You will also practice some greetings and simple conversations. Then, you will learn to ask questions about prices, how to describe articles of clothing, the names of stores, and how to talk about coins, bills and checks.

Week 2

You will learn vocabulary for various meals and foods, read food advertisements, comparing prices, and placing orders for food. Then, learn to identify different types of housing, describe parts of a home, interpret classified ads, use the telephone to make appointments, and identify furniture.

Week 3

You will learn to identify locations and services, give and follow street directions and directions in a mall, leave phone messages, and write a message on a postcard. Then, you will review what you learned so far: talking with others, shopping, food, housing, and the local community.

Week 4

You will practice identifying parts of the body, describing illnesses and health problems, giving advice, asking for information at a hospital, and describing healthy and unhealthy practices. Then, practice identifying common occupations, interpreting classified ads, writing your job history, performing a job interview, and interpreting performance reviews.

Week 5

Topics of this lesson will start with evaluating study habits, organizing study materials, identifying learning opportunities, identifying work preferences, and developing goals. Then, practice asking for and giving personal information, identifying family relationships, describing people, interpreting and writing schedules, and talking about the weather.

Week 6

Learn how to identify and describe clothing, ask about prices, read advertisements and receipts, and ask for assistance in a store. And finally, you will review and talk about these topics: health and fitness, working, people and learning, everyday life, and shopping.

Rob Jenkins

Rob Jenkins is a professor at Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education. He has more than 16 years of teaching experience in the English language classroom and holds an MS in TESOL from California State University Fullerton. Rob is the Professional Development Coordinator for Continuing Education Programs at his institution. He is also the author of textbooks and other materials for English language learners. He has received curriculum development, professional development, and publications awards from his college and most recently was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2008.  

Staci Johnson

Staci Johnson has taught all levels of adult ESL, including credit, non-credit, and workplace English. She holds an MA in Linguistics with a Teaching ESL Certificate, which is supported by more than 10 years in the English language classroom. Staci has also written textbooks and other materials for English language learners. Her passions are teacher training and curriculum development, both of which she does on a continual basis.

Charletta Bowen

Charletta Bowen will be your facilitator in the Discussion Areas. She is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and has been teaching ESL for 30 years. She currently teaches advanced level students at a university in the U.S.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
