Want to take your intermediate English skills to the next level? If so, this is the course for you!  

Don't worry if you don't know a lot of English. In these lessons, you'll review intermediate skills and build additional skills step-by-step. Fun activities and games will help you learn the English you need for real-life situations including interviewing for a job, buying a home, and taking care of your health. You'll also learn key words and phrases you can use in everyday and emergency situations. This course will teach you some important skills including how to fill out a job application, read a roadmap, and make a budget. 

You'll build grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills step-by-step as you go through the course. You'll also develop strategies for reading comprehension. Additionally, you'll improve your listening skills through audio and video activities. With each lesson, you'll become more fluent, more confident, and more prepared to speak English at home, at school, or on the job.

Week 1

In this lesson, you will use the present perfect to talk about events starting in the past and continuing up to the present as you identify parts of the body, communicate symptoms to a doctor, and talk about health habits. You will also work on interpreting nutrition and fitness information. Then, you will look at job advertisements and learn to pick out the skills required for each. You’ll also fill out a job application and learn about how to prepare for a job interview.

Week 2

You will learn the difference between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns and where to use each one. Skills include learning to interpret a pay stub and benefit information and learning to identify safe workplace behavior. You will also learn how to make polite requests and how to respond to criticism and compliments. Then, you will practice comparing and contrasting ideas using the words both, and, neither, not, but, and however as you learn how to identify U.S. geographical locations, understand the U.S. system of government, express opinions, and write a speech.

Week 3

You will practice the used to form in statements and questions about past habits or states that have changed. You’ll also work with adjective clauses starting with where, who, and which. You’ll create your own goal chart, identify obstacles in your life, and think of solutions. You’ll also write about an important person and work on time-management skills.

Week 4

You’ll practice making statements using the passive voice to emphasize an object or action when the doer is not important as you calculate monthly expenses, identify ways to save money, interpret credit card and loan information, analyze advertising techniques, and write a business letter. Then, practice interpreting housing ads, comparing types of housing, and identifying housing preferences. You’ll go through the steps of purchasing a home. You’ll also take a look at mortgage information.

Week 5

Learn how to use embedded questions as you practice locating community resources, using the telephone, and giving and responding to suggestions. You’ll also work on reading a road map and discovering places to volunteer in your community. Then, understand the present perfect continuous, which is used to accurately describe time and duration. You’ll describe symptoms and interpret doctor’s diagnoses and nutrition information. You’ll also be introduced to several medical terms, the differences in insurance plans, and health insurance applications.

Week 6

This lesson focuses on helping you identify skills and characteristics you need to get a good job. You’ll also get tips on how to conduct a job search, how to write a resume, how to write a cover letter, and how to prepare for a job interview. And finally, you’ll review everything you’ve learned in the course as you begin speaking English at a more advanced level.

Rob Jenkins

Rob Jenkins is a professor at Santa Ana College School of Continuing Education. He has more than 16 years of teaching experience in the English language classroom and holds an MS in TESOL from California State University Fullerton. Rob is the Professional Development Coordinator for Continuing Education Programs at his institution. He is also the author of textbooks and other materials for English language learners. He has received curriculum development, professional development, and publications awards from his college and most recently was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2008.  

Staci Johnson

Staci Johnson has taught all levels of adult ESL, including credit, non-credit, and workplace English. She holds an MA in Linguistics with a Teaching ESL Certificate, which is supported by more than 10 years in the English language classroom. Staci has also written textbooks and other materials for English language learners. Her passions are teacher training and curriculum development, both of which she does on a continual basis.

Charletta Bowen

Charletta Bowen will be your facilitator in the Discussion Areas. She is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and has been teaching ESL for 30 years. She currently teaches advanced level students at a university in the U.S.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
