Introduction to Statistics

Do you want to improve your understanding of data and use it to make decisions? This is the course for you! With easy-to-understand examples combined with real-world applications, this course provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to start analyzing data. You'll explore how to use data and apply statistics in real-life problems and situations. 

Throughout the course, we'll use real data and a variety of examples drawn from business and industry, health care and medicine, sports, education, politics, news events, and the social sciences. Don't worry if detailed calculations are not your thing! We'll use a variety of free online resources to aid with calculations. By the end, you'll be able to successfully apply and interpret basic statistical procedures.

Introduction to Statistics Outline

Week 1

Learn the best ways to collect reliable data and use it to make informed decisions. You’ll also learn how to summarize data and describe its center along with its variability with examples from different workplaces.

Week 2

Learn how to read and construct different types of graphs including dot plots, histograms and more so you spot unusual values in data. Then focus on charts and tables that will allow you to summarize and display qualitative data from survey questions.

Week 3

Look at relationships between two quantitative variables as you learn to make scatterplots and describe what you see. You'll also use correlation to measure the strength of a particular link. Then go beyond describing and measuring association between variables and use linear regression to find an equation to make predictions.

Week 4

Study the basics of probability and learn how to apply it in a variety of situations. Then learn about probability models and expected value as you focus on bell-shaped distribution in a variety of settings, and learn to estimate probabilities.

Week 5

See the most important result in all of statistics—the central limit theorem—and learn why the normal model plays such an important role. You'll also find out how to use data and probability to evaluate a claim. Then you’ll begin your journey into statistical inference by focusing on confidence intervals for proportions.

Week 6

Find out what steps make up a hypothesis test and how you can interpret the results, make inferences, and arrive at informed decisions. Finally, you'll learn to calculate and interpret confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for a mean, and see how to analyze data from a paired experiment.

Ben Sellers has more than 17 years of experience in teaching at all levels from elementary classes to college mathematics and statistics courses.  He has taught college students, working professionals, adult learners, high school students, and homeschoolers, both online and in the traditional classroom. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in the mathematical sciences and has been a mathematical and statistical consultant in industry and in education.  He has taught a wide variety of students in the medical field, including lab technicians, nurses, pharmacists, and aspiring physicians.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
