Week 1

In your first lesson, you will be introduced to the term adolescent development and become familiar with some terminology.  You will begin to learn about the three main stages of adolescence to help you become familiar with the tasks and milestones inherent in each stage. Then you will focus on some external changes, such as puberty, and the impact it can have on the adolescent, as well as how these changes can affect how you treat an adolescent.

Week 2

In this lesson you will look at some of the internal changes kids experience during adolescence. You will learn about cognitive development, which is how someone thinks. Then you will take a close look at socialization, peers and peer groups, friends, intimacy, and social changes in your adolescent’s behavior.

Week 3

One of the things that change most during adolescence is a child’s family relationships and how family members interact with each other. This lesson will take a look at some of those changes and the impact this may have on both the adolescent and the family. Then you will learn about emotional development and the significance this may have for adolescent development.

Week 4

Explore how we think about ourselves, how our identity develops, what might influence our identity, and our self-concept.  Then you will look at moral development and faith separate from religion. You will become familiar with the overall thought, ideas and processes that seem common to adolescent moral development.

Week 5

In this lesson you are going to look at stress, anxiety, frustration, and defense mechanisms. You will explore how these things affect all of us and how some of this is demonstrated during adolescence. Then you will look at four separate things:  nature versus nurture, temperament, personality, and resiliency. This lesson is mostly about how a better understanding of ourselves can help us to better understand others.

Week 6

Review some of the adolescent needs that you have covered in prior to this lesson, then look at chronic illness, gay and lesbian youth and the issues these individuals may be faced with, and then learn about parenting the adolescent.  For your final lesson, you will look at the abnormal part of adolescent development. You will be given a brief overview of disorders or conditions that are consistently viewed within the adolescent population.
