Using a layered curriculum founded on solid number sense and concrete, pictorial, and abstract computational strategies, Singaporean teachers make math purposeful, interesting, and relevant. Learn their secrets and be able to have the same kind of meaningful math lessons in your classroom.

In this teacher training course, you'll learn over two dozen strategies to make math click for your students. We'll begin by exploring what Singapore Math is and how it has become such a powerful and highly regarded math curriculum. Then we'll talk about how number sense and place value instruction are the basis for all Singapore Math. From there, we'll learn a variety of computational strategies to make addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division a cinch. You won't need a passport to discover the curriculum of the world's math leader!

Singapore Math: Number Sense and Computational Strategies Outline

Week 1

Start exploring Singapore Math, the number sense instruction that it revolves around and how number sense and computation the Singapore way can help you reach your students. You’ll learn about Singapore’s number sense instruction in detail as you learn to integrate number sense into every computation by building a solid foundation on concrete, pictorial, and abstract number sense activities.

Week 2

Learn how Singapore Math brings place value instruction to life with place value mats and disks. If you and your students love games, you're sure to enjoy this concrete way of learning about place value! Then learn three impressive Singapore Math addition strategies starting with single-digit problems and moving to multi-digit problems and problems requiring regrouping.

Week 3

Help students transition from manipulatives to algorithms using their number sense as a guide as you learn about branching, left-to-right addition, and vertical addition. Then you’ll go back to your place value mats as you focus on subtraction.

Week 4

Practice subtraction with branching and with the traditional algorithm. Then, go back to your place value mats for multiplication, only this time you’ll put groups of chips on the board to represent quantities. You’ll see firsthand how versatile place value mats really are when doing multiplication with and without regrouping.

Week 5

Meet model drawing, multiplication through the distributive property, and area model multiplication, three inventive strategies that teach us to look at multiplication in a totally new way. Then, while it is often considered the hardest of the four core mathematical operations, you’ll learn a number of ways to make division click for our struggling learners.

Week 6

As you finish the course, you’ll learn how to bring all of this together in your classroom. You’ll create a portable toolkit you can use to share Singapore Math with your students and other teachers at your school, and discuss the most effective way to slowly and methodically integrate the best of Singapore Math into your current curriculum.

Anni Stipek

Anni Stipek graduated from University of Puget Sound with a bachelor's degree in  Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. She has over 20 years experience in the classroom ranging from teaching kindergarten to high school math intervention courses, as well as five years as a math consultant and presenter for Staff Development for Educators. She has written and facilitates other online courses, including The Foundations of Singapore Math Model Drawing Grades 1-6 and The Foundations of Singapore Math Number Sense/Computation Strategies Grades 1-6. Anni's passion is to share with as many educators the pedagogy and methods that The Singapore Ministry of Education promotes to their teachers and students so we can help our student's master mathematics as they do in Singapore.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
