Discover a Singapore Math strategy called model drawing which gives students seven reliable steps that will help them solve just about every word problem they encounter. Then, learn the process of model drawing: determine variables, make a visual representation of the problem (the model), adjust that model for problem information, place our question mark to indicate what we're solving for, do the computation, and write a final sentence.
Learn how to solve a variety of addition and subtraction problems with model drawings that will help you whether you teach first grade or sixth.
Learn to solve potentially tricky multiplication and division problems using model drawings.
Tackle fraction word problems that are easy to visualize with the unit bar model. Then, learn how to set up the two different comparisons in a typical rate problem (like miles per gallon or cookies per plate). You'll soon be breezing through even the most complicated rate problems.
Discover how to solve ratio problems which is all about finding a base unit and working from there. Then, you’ll learn how to solve percent word problems using the handy percent ruler, a great model drawing trick which makes these problems a snap to solve.
Practice solving word problems and matching a word problem to a pre-created model so you’ll be ready to teach the methods you’ve learned to your students and fellow teachers.

She has over 20 years experience in the classroom ranging from teaching kindergarten to high school math intervention courses, as well as five years as a math consultant and presenter for Staff Development for Educators. She has written and facilitates other online courses, including The Foundations of Singapore Math Model Drawing Grades 1-6 and The Foundations of Singapore Math Number Sense/Computation Strategies Grades 1-6. Anni's passion is to share with as many educators the pedagogy and methods that The Singapore Ministry of Education promotes to their teachers and students so we can help our student's master mathematics as they do in Singapore.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!
Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.
Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.
The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
