Guided Reading: Strategies for the Differentiated Classroom

Now more than ever, teachers are grappling with the question of how to reach struggling readers.  While there are no quick fixes, many teachers are combining the principles of differentiated instruction and guided reading with great success.

Differentiated instruction tactics will help you understand how your students lean so you can teach in a way that makes sense to them.  This course shows you how to apply those tactics within the guided reading framework.  These lessons will help you lead students through new ways of approaching text.  The result will be a classroom full of students who are able to negotiate increasingly challenging texts with unprecedented fluency.

Week 1

In the first lesson, you will take a look at differentiated instruction combined with guided reading.  You will discover how blending these techniques will aid you in building a balanced literary framework that will help your students negotiate a variety of texts with success.  Then you will learn how to evaluate your students’ readiness, interests, learning profiles, and social elements.  You will use this information to drive meaningful, focused instruction.

Week 2

In this lesson, you will learn how to plan quality pre-, ongoing, and summative assessments that will give you a clear picture of student learning.  This will allow you tell what is working and what isn’t so that you can adjust your teaching strategies as you go. Then you will look at flexible grouping, which is a mainstay of differentiated instruction.  This technique will allow you to accommodate a diversity of students.

Week 3

This lesson will teach you how to choose the right texts by developing an understanding of the criteria of good fiction and nonfiction texts. Then you will learn to prepare students before reading with activities that build anticipation and ground the text in prior learning.  You will be amazed at the results.

Week 4

In this lesson, you will learn how to teach students the right way to read, to comprehend what they’ve just read, and to make inferences.  Then you will discover the after-reading framework, where you will teach students to turn information into ideas as they go beyond the text and into the world.

Week 5

Explore tiering, which is a concept that helps you separate students based on their readiness, interests, or learning profiles.  Then you will learn to anchor your students to the material they have learned by extending learning in new avenues.  You will learn to do this through games, writing prompts, and many other fun creative activities.

Week 6

In this last lesson, you will learn the basics of curriculum compacting, learning contracts, and individual projects. These strategies will help transition your students to independent readers.  You will discover ways to encourage struggling readers and help parents extend the learning at home.
