Week 1

In this first lesson you will examine the purpose of IT certifications, with specific emphasis on Comp TIA Network + and how it fits into the career of a network tech. You will explore how networks work in general, covering such essential concepts as servers and clients, Ethernet, switches, and LANs.You will also examine two different models technicians have used to troubleshoot networks successfully. Then you will learn about all kinds of network connections, such as cable types---coaxial, twisted-pair, and fiber---and wireless options.

Week 2

In this lesson you will jump into network topologies and standards by exploring the Ethernet in detail. You will also look at standards that used to matter as well that you will see on the Comp TIA Network + exam. Then you will discover all the major device types, such as switches, routers, and wireless access points. You will learn how they function in modern networks.

Week 3

Delve into the protocol suit, discuss the many protocols included, how they work together, and what resources they require.  You will also learn about addressing and naming conventions used in TCP/IP networks and how computers get named. Then, you will examine interconnection networks, such as the Internet. Routers are the primary tools used for the job so you will explore how they work and the routing protocols they use.

Week 4

This lesson will explain the many sides of virtualization, a process of using software to handle jobs traditionally serviced with hardware. You will cover VLANs and virtual computing, and learn how complex networks use these technologies to accomplish specific goals. Then you will explore the many forms of remote connectivity, ways to interconnect a local computer or network with distant computers.

Week 5

In this lesson you will discover the many aspects of network security. You will look at threats to your network, from social engineering to cracking encryption. You will then examine the many ways the good guys combat the bad guys through authentication and authorization standards and protocols. Then you will start to put everything together that you have learned so far in this course. You will learn how to design and implement both wired and wireless SOHO networks. You will examine categories of requirements, unified communication, specialized network devices, and industrial control systems.

Week 6

Roll up your sleeves, and plunge into network troubleshooting. You will first look at the Comp TIA Network + troubleshooting model and then examine top network hardware faults. You will learn about network hardware tools, and look at troubleshooting WAN issues. Then you will examine a variety of practical concerns in network management, including emergency procedures, safety, segmentation, and network configuration and monitoring.
