Prepare for the GED® Test

If you're comfortable reading a high school textbook, doing basic math operations like fractions and decimals without a calculator, and writing a short letter in English, you're ready to start preparing for your GED® test! This course will help you analyze your strengths and weaknesses so you can focus your studying on the areas that you need most. You will get the basics of what you need to know to succeed on the four GED® test modules: Reasoning through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematical Reasoning.

After completion of this course, you should be well-equipped to take—and pass—the GED® test! Doing so can positively impact your personal and professional life!

Week 1

Learn the answers to many of the questions that may concern you about the GED® test. Then, get an overview of the RLA and focus on your reading skills. Together we'll map out a strategy for mastering the reading passages of the RLA.

Week 2

Explore the parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure in order to prepare for the editing part of the RLA test module. Then, apply the reading and grammar lessons to create an extended essay response.

Week 3

Learn about the mathematical content of the test and the approved GED® calculator. Then, learn and practice the algebra skills you will need for the test - like simplifying expressions and solving equations with one variable.

Week 4

Develop basic algebra skills and combine them with geometry concepts. You will learn how to plot points, graph lines, and figure out the slope of lines on a coordinate grid. Then, focus on your first science lesson by investigating the cosmos and learning the laws of physics.

Week 5

Learn about genetics with a focus on human health and living systems. Then, gain an understanding of your government and the importance of being a good citizen. As you prepare for the social studies test, you'll learn about events that shaped the history and economy of the United States.

Week 6

Explore the second social studies theme as you learn to analyze political cartoons, master the basics of economics, and learn more about 20th-century history. Then, use a checklist to make sure you are ready for the GED® test. You’ll find tips and techniques to make test day less stressful and consider your plans for the future.

Barbara Rolston

Barbara Rolston holds a master's degree and has been teaching GED® preparatory classes since 1975 in a variety of settings, including adult schools, community colleges, and large corporations. She also was responsible for administering the GED® exam in a correctional facility for two years.

Prepare for the GED® Test Requirements / Prerequisites

You should have the ability to read and write the English language at a high-school level. You should also be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers. If you are testing in the United States, you should have an understanding of the English measurement system. If you're testing in Canada, you should be familiar with the metric system.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
