This course has been a revelation. I've attended many writers workshops over the past quarter century, and none of them equaled your course. I thought I had a solid grasp on writing techniques and the basics, but you presented solid, step-by-step information that was not only helpful but stimulating and exciting. Concurrently, your comments and encouragement were right on target, as was the support of the classmates. Well done and thorough, and the exercises were superb. Thank you very much.
I didn't have a story that needed to be told. I didn't consider myself a closet writer. I didn't have a book of ideas. I took this course because I wanted to expand my horizons and have fun. This course surpassed all my expectations. I gained insight into and increased the trust in my creative ability. I have become more observant of the world and people that surround me. I've used the skills I learned in this course to become more aware of who I am and what I want in life.
I have never before taken a writing course and I wouldn't have believed that an online course would be so interactive. It was a great experience. I learned so much more than I thought I would. I took the course on a whim and it turned out to be the most fun I have had in a long time. It actually has got me writing rather than just thinking about writing.
I have taken several courses on writing, and this one is by far one of the best. So many courses don't tell you "how" to go about tackling the writing process, and this class showed me exactly how to do that. I learned a lot, and I would enjoy more classes like this one. Thank you!
I was very hesitant about taking an online course, unsure of what to expect. However, I found this course and our instructor, Ann, to be wonderful. I learned so much, and never felt neglected or unimportant. Thank you to Ann for a great course and help, and thank you for offering this course.
I went to the international writers conference in Canada and found that much of the material in the workshops was review after doing this course. I am very pleased with how much material was covered in such a short time. The instructor was very informative and professional.
This class was the perfect introduction to creative writing. The anonymity of the online environment is a wonderful way for students to take those first tentative steps in sharing creative pieces without feeling vulnerable or too exposed. I learned to take some risks with my writing, received encouragement along with constructive criticism that made my creative pieces better, and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. It has made me want to take more online classes. Many thanks Ann. I may actually realize my dreams because of this class.
The Beginning Writer course was excellent. I enjoyed this course more than any other credit or non-credit course I have ever taken. The instructor was knowledgeable and encouraging. The feedback received on the assignments was very helpful. I've never said this about a course before, but I am actually sorry to see this class end! Taking this course has encouraged me to take more writing classes. My heartfelt thanks to the instructor for an terrific course.
I have taken numerous courses, both in class and online and no one has been able to do what Ann has done for me. Ann brilliantly guided her class from making tiny, fearful baby steps with new words, to reaching out to others in our writing, expanding our self-confidence, and mostly engaging us in the art of writing. She not only taught us the hows, she also taught us the whys. She correspondingly showed us our inner critics and ways to deal with them. She addressed everything that a beginning writer feels and needs. She also did something for me which she is unaware of. My son read some of my assignments and listened to me talk about the lessons. He became excited and signed up for her course. I want to thank Ann for making this course the wonderful experience I never expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking this class. Sharing your writing with others can be intimidating, but sharing in this format is freeing! The exercises are interesting and while I am more aware of good writing practice, I am also now much more aware of myself. Be careful if you sign up for this course - it's a little bit like going to therapy. You will meet yourself on the pages of your writing. It's amazing and fun and I am thankful for the Ann's instruction and constant encouragement!

You’ll start writing in your very first lesson! Learn how to enjoy yourself while you write as you listen to how your mind works so you can practice turning thoughts into words. Then, practice writing description and capturing detail. You’ll also start work on a short, creative piece that you'll finish by the end of the course.
Explore the different forms that fiction and creative nonfiction can take. Then, take a unique approach to point of view by writing from each of the points of view, then learning about them afterward.
Find your own creative center and use it to come up with ideas that are better than you expected by trying a technique called "galumphing", taking the attitude of a bricoleur, and gaining the knowledge you need to continually nurture your creative ability. Then, learn about one of the most amazing tools a writer can use: revision.
Learn why it's so easy to write poorly, and discover some good ways to catch yourself when you do. You’ll learn a great technique for eliminating clichés and use the depths of your creative ability to write a powerful, original description. Then, practice fixing choppy sentences, and begin to think about your readers and what they have to do with what you want to write.
Examine how the act of writing teaches you about yourself with fun and interactive exercises designed to help you discover inner motivation and overcome negative self-talk. Then, learn the three basic building blocks of a plot as you discover why even simple stories can intrigue and hold your reader.
Practice developing characters and using dialogue by learning to pay attention to people. Finally, you'll try out two exploratory writing exercises that will help you develop the trust you need to keep on writing when you doubt yourself. Then, you'll share your short creative piece with your instructor and your fellow students.
