Week 1

You’ll start writing in your very first lesson! Learn how to enjoy yourself while you write as you listen to how your mind works so you can practice turning thoughts into words. Then, practice writing description and capturing detail. You’ll also start work on a short, creative piece that you'll finish by the end of the course.

Week 2

Explore the different forms that fiction and creative nonfiction can take. Then, take a unique approach to point of view by writing from each of the points of view, then learning about them afterward.

Week 3

Find your own creative center and use it to come up with ideas that are better than you expected by trying a technique called "galumphing", taking the attitude of a bricoleur, and gaining the knowledge you need to continually nurture your creative ability. Then, learn about one of the most amazing tools a writer can use: revision.

Week 4

Learn why it's so easy to write poorly, and discover some good ways to catch yourself when you do. You’ll learn a great technique for eliminating clichés and use the depths of your creative ability to write a powerful, original description. Then, practice fixing choppy sentences, and begin to think about your readers and what they have to do with what you want to write.

Week 5

Examine how the act of writing teaches you about yourself with fun and interactive exercises designed to help you discover inner motivation and overcome negative self-talk. Then, learn the three basic building blocks of a plot as you discover why even simple stories can intrigue and hold your reader.

Week 6

Practice developing characters and using dialogue by learning to pay attention to people. Finally, you'll try out two exploratory writing exercises that will help you develop the trust you need to keep on writing when you doubt yourself. Then, you'll share your short creative piece with your instructor and your fellow students.
