Think about the seven characteristics of content-based instruction
discussed in this lesson. Draft a course outline for a content-based
course you could teach. Provide the following information:
- a description of your students. This can be a group you're
working with now, one you worked with in the past, or one
you might work with in the future. What level are your students?
What are their needs and goals?
- an overarching course theme and general course goals
- a one- or two-paragraph summary of the content to be covered
- your predictions about how each of the seven characteristics
of content-based instruction would be realized in your course.
In other words, how could you achieve each of the following
goals? Sketch out some of your ideas.
- learning language and content simultaneously
- focusing on relevant content areas
- contextualizing language through content
- supporting learners' linguistic development
- developing academic and/or professional language proficiency
- using authentic materials
- integrating skills and increasing cognitive and linguistic
complexity
