About Minneapolis Community & Technical College
Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) is the only comprehensive urban community and technical college in Minnesota. The college enrolls over 10,000 students annually and trains 7,000 individuals through the Division of Continuing Education and training. MCTC offers 50 occupational programs leading directly to employment and 47 programs aimed at facilitating transfer to Baccalaureate College and university programs. The average age of an MCTC student is 28. The college is one of the state’s most diverse, with 44% of its enrollment represented by students of color. In 2002, nearly all the college’s technical graduates who were available for placement were employed in their fields of study. Of those who responded to the college’s annual survey, 69% of MCTC’s 2002 liberal arts graduates continued their education and 28% were employed after graduation.
MCTC’s student population includes significant numbers of students with educational and economic disadvantages. Roughly 26% of MCTC’s student enrollment receives some form of public assistance. Approximately 24% of the student body report that they represent the first generation of their families to enroll at a post-secondary institution. Nearly 19% of MCTC’s student body report that they are single parents. Additionally, there are refugees and immigrants with significant English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) needs, students with disabilities requiring adaptive strategies and working parents who require greater flexibility for all college services.
