You will also learn how to monitor and evaluate writing progress over time, ensuring that all students can be academically successful in your classroom.

This teacher professional development course will help you understand the importance of providing explicit writing support for your English Language Learners (ELLs). This course will teach you how to support students through three different phases of the writing process: before, during, and after writing. You will learn explicit strategies to teach your ELL students to help improve their proficiency, and you will review examples of these ELL strategies in action. You will leave the course able to design and implement comprehensive writing lessons that you can administer to your ELLs.

The course also comes with various graphic organizers, student support resources, trackers, and planning documents so that you have everything you need to properly implement the course concepts.

  1. ELL Proficiency Levels
    1. The importance of supporting writing in ELLs
    2. Appropriate writing strategies to implement in your classroom to support ELL students through all stages of the writing process
    3. How to monitor and assess ELL student growth in writing
  2. Support Strategies Before Writing
    1. About the Before Writing Stage
    2. Considerations for generating appropriate writing prompts for ELL students
    3. Vocabulary strategies to support the vocabulary development of your ELLs
    4. How to use graphic organizers to support your ELL students with the planning process
  3. Strategies for During Writing
    1. About the During Writing Stage
    2. Strategies such as buddy writing and interactive writing that are great ways to improve the writing fluency and confidence of ELLs
    3. That exposing students to quality mentor texts and providing them with sentence stems or frames are excellent ways to scaffold the process of writing
  4. Strategies for After Writing
    1. About the After Writing Stage
    2. That ELL students need specific instruction in how to revise and edit their work
    3. That self-reflection and peer-revising/editing are two strategies teachers can implement to scaffold their ELL students' post-writing process
    4. That publishing a writing piece can take on many forms, but should always be a source of pride and celebrated for all students
  5. Monitoring the Progress of ELLs
    1. How to monitor and assess the progress of your ELLs
    2. That Can Do Checklists, student reflections, writing conferences, and student portfolios are excellent ways to track student progress
    3. That progress can be monitored over time with a detailed progress monitoring documentation tool
  6. Choosing Appropriate Strategies
    1. How to choose the most appropriate strategies for your students, based on student needs and your instructional goals
    2. Why it is so important to constantly evaluate your strategy choices
  7. Putting it All Together
    1. Using the sample provided, build a writing lesson for your English Language Learners.
  8. Applying What you Have Learned
    1. Get ideas on how to implement the concepts into your classroom, find a list of online resources about English Language Learners, and read the research behind supporting writing in English Language Learners.

  • This course can be taken on either a PC, Mac, or Chromebook.

Software Requirements:

  • PC: Windows 10 or later.
  • Mac: macOS 10.6 or later.
  • Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox is preferred. Microsoft Edge and Safari are also compatible.
  • Microsoft Word Online
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Software must be installed and fully operational before the course begins.

Other:

  • Email capabilities and access to a personal email account.
  • Editing of a Microsoft Word document is required in this course. You may use a free version of Microsoft Word Online, or Google Docs if you do not have Microsoft Office installed on your computer. Model Teaching can provide support for this.

Instructional Material Requirements:
