Laurie Ulrich has been writing about and teaching people to use Microsoft Office for more than 20 years—including personally training thousands of students, writing hundreds of training manuals, and authoring and co-authoring more than 30 books on subjects including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access. Her books include 2000-page epics that document every button, bell, and whistle, as well as friendlier introductory and troubleshooting books for new users. Her most recent publication on Microsoft Access is Access 2016 for Dummies. Prerequisites:

This program is designed to prepare you for a career in graphic design. Previous experience with Photoshop is not necessary. You will need an internet connection, be familiar with using the internet, have emailing capabilities, and be familiar with navigating folders and naming and saving files to your computer.

  • This course can be taken on either a PC or Mac. A Chromebook is not compatible.

Software Requirements:

  • PC: Windows 10 or newer.
  • Mac: OS Mojave (10.14) or later (Catalina – version 10.15, Big Sur – version 11)
  • Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox is preferred. Microsoft Edge and Safari are also compatible.
  • Microsoft Word or an equivalent word-processing program, such as Google Docs or Apple Pages.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Software must be installed and fully operational before the course begins.

Other:

  • Email capabilities and access to a personal email account.

The instructional materials required for this course are included in enrollment. The following textbooks will be shipped to you approximately 7-10 business days after enrollment:

  • The Elements of Graphic Design, by Alex W. White
  • Typographic Design: Form and Communication, by Carter, R., Maxa, S., Sanders, M., Meggs, P.B., & Day, B.
  • Your enrollment in this course includes a 12-month subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. You will learn how to activate this subscription in Lesson 1.

Will I be able to market myself as a graphic designer after taking this class?

Like most things, practice makes perfect. You'll have the basic design skills and Photoshop abilities to take on most graphic design projects, but it's recommended that you do some pro-bono (no-charge, for needy organizations, family businesses, etc.) work before you put yourself out there as an experienced designer. Build your portfolio based on what you learn in this class and apply your experience to a few jobs before you making an official leap as a Professional Graphic Designer.

Can I make a good living as a graphic designer?

Yes, if you work hard and develop a good client list. It's important to seek clients out, provide all the services you can to these clients, and make good connections for word-of-mouth referrals. Also, stay involved with professional organizations, chambers of commerce, or local small business networking groups. Get your name out there, and use social media to promote your services.
