Week 1

In this first lesson, you will explore how to find your own niche within your chosen craft. You will learn about resources for spotting future trends and making your business a success.  Then you will get some foolproof guidelines for choosing the name that is right for your business.  You will also learn how to secure your name and design a logo your customers will remember you by.

Week 2

Explore your options, from the home studio to the retail space and choose the one that is right for you. Then you will learn how to design your new workspace for increased productivity and safety.  You will learn about setting up workstations, choosing work surfaces, lighting, organizing and storing craft supplies.  You will learn how to buy your supplies in bulk to maximize your profit.

Week 3

This lesson will show you how marketing in arts and crafts business differs from most other enterprises.  You will also learn how to create a marketing strategy to get the word out about your new business.  Then you will discover a formula for arriving at the best price while leaving yourself enough wiggle room to be flexible.  You will also learn how to protect your work through copyrights and through insuring your business against loss or damage.

Week 4

In this lesson, you will find out how to see sales in a new light---one that meshes with your personality and creative integrity.  Then you will explore how to get your crafts into retail stores at wholesale prices, place your products on consignment, and approach galleries and develop long-term relationships with them.

Week 5

Discover the ins and outs of how to sell retail through craft parties, and some of the principles of setting up your own retail store.  You will also learn how and where to sell retail to a worldwide market on the Internet.  You will learn what the insiders know: how to find the best shows, and what you will need to get into them.  You will discover how to plan the details of travel and lodging and get an idea of what to bring along to ensure a smooth craft show experience.

Week 6

Finally, you will learn about designing booths and displays that draw people in. You will learn how to keep them there with compelling demonstrations, solid craft fair sales, and smart marketing techniques.  Then you will learn how to find teaching opportunities where you can teach your craft and design your own curriculum.  You will have everything you need to approach your local craft store, art school, or continuing education department with a professional proposal for your class.

Teri King

An award-winning artist, Teri King began her formal study of art at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas when she was just 3 years old. She currently works in several different mediums, including ceramics, oil painting, and precious metal clay. Teri's ceramic and jewelry pieces are in private collections around the world, and she has received acclaim for her interior design work. She enjoys teaching up-and-coming artists, which she has done for the past three decades.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits.

How does it work?

Once a course session starts, two lessons will be released each week for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

The interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes two weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The final exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the final exam has been released, you will have two weeks plus 10 days (24 days total) to complete the final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
