Understand the fundamental elements of successful event management. Learn about the administration, coordination, and marketing elements that go into creating and promoting an event.
Discuss special event career opportunities and possible room for growth within the field. You’ll also cover special event management technologies that help with storing data, managing time, and reaching out to vendors and attendees.
Define the ways in which you and your team will be held legally and ethically responsible during an event. Ensure you know how to receive the proper licenses and insurance for all events. Also expect to cover ways to remain socially responsible and how to reduce the environmental impact of your planned events.
Review best practices for ordering and placing designs and decorations. Understand how the size and location of a venue can impact the scope of decorations permitted inside.
Learn how to bring together backdrops, props, flowers, fabrics, balloons, and lighting elements. Understand how to coordinate event entertainment, signage, and catering services.
Go over the various types of events that you may want to work on. This portion of the course will cover corporate and social events, weddings, fairs, festivals, spectacles, and parades.
Jim C. Monroe, CMP, CSEP, has been a special events professional for over 30 years. With Jayna Monroe, CMP, his wife and business partner, and their team of designers and technicians, he decorates and manages events for corporate, community, and family celebrations. Jim attended the State University of New York at Fredonia, Fredonia, NY, and received his BA in Speech and Drama. Then he attended University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH for his MA. He has been a Design Director and Senior Event Manager in Dallas, Texas, and a member of the Travel, Exposition, and Meeting Management Program at Richland College. Jim is also has been a member of Bill Reed Decorations Inc. and an instructor and scenic artist. He is a Certified Meeting Professional and Certified Special Event Professional. He was awarded the Esprit Award for Best Industry Contribution of 2006, presented at ISES EventWorld, the MPI DFW Chamber of Rising Star Award, and the Outstanding Service Award from TxACOM. In addition to this, Jim was an active participant in the Texas Association of Convention Operations Managers, International Special Events Society (ISES), Meeting Professionals International (MPI), National Association of Catering Executives (NACE), Association of Event and Convention Professionals (TxACOM), and APEX Initiative, Terminology Committee, Convention Industry Council (CIC).

There are no specific prerequisites for this program. It is taught at the college level and requires the basic high-school level academic competencies. Students should have a high school degree or the equivalent, basic liberal arts knowledge, and an understanding of and interest in different cultures. Students will also need a basic understanding of computers and must be comfortable navigating the Internet.

ed2go courses are non-credit courses, so they do not qualify for federal aid. In some states, vocational rehab or workforce development boards will pay for qualified students to take our courses. Additionally, some students may qualify for financial assistance when they enroll, if they meet certain requirements.
ed2go programs will provide you with the skills you need to obtain an entry-level position in most cases. We don’t provide direct job placement services, but our facilitators and career counselors will help you build your resume and are available to give advice on finding your first job. Facilitators will also be available to use as a professional reference upon completion of the program. Potential students should always do research on the job market in their area before registering.
