Week 1

Learn to analyze what makes good memoir writing, better understand the genre, and become familiar with the applications. Then, discover ways to optimize and analyze the stories in life. You will consider what direction you will take in your writing.

Week 2

Find opportunities to create ways to allow the stories to be revealed. Then, understand and be able to develop character studies in order to bring characters and people to life. Discover some things about yourself as you reflect on those who have been a part of your world.

Week 3

Learn to organize and brainstorm material for the story. Then, write stories that are jogged to mind via objects and experiences. You will do this by investigating your senses and your memories.

Week 4

Focus on life-changing moments that reveal the story. Learn where to find writing time and when may be the most creative times for working on your life story. Then, utilize and conduct interviews to capture your stories as you perfect your journalistic skills.

Week 5

Learn to analyze the reader, and explore how to write for the reader. Then, develop the skills necessary to format the stories or memoir in chapters and logical order.

Week 6

Utilize techniques to research, self-edit, and develop a marketable writing style. Discuss selecting titles and including supplemental material—focusing on the extras that could make your book visually appealing. Finally, discover and analyze publishing options.

Hardware Requirements: 

  • This course can be taken on either a PC or Mac device.

Software Requirements: 

  • PC: Windows XP or later.
  • Mac: OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later.
  • Browser: The latest version of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari (We recommend Firefox or Chrome).

  • Email capabilities and access to a personal email account.
  • Software must be installed and fully operational before the course begins.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
