(9 contact hours) Humans interact with the environment constantly. Building your knowledge can help you take action to improve your health, well-being, and the environment around you. This course focuses on the various ways the environment impacts human health. You will first learn about air and water safety, the global impacts of overpopulation and climate changes, and common health hazards found in the home. You will then learn steps for preventing or controlling disease, injury, and disability related to the interactions between people and their environment.

Poor environmental quality has the greatest impact on people whose health status is already at risk. But with environmental health education, you can help address the societal and environmental factors that increase the likelihood of exposure and disease.

Lesson 1 - Are Your Air and Water Safe? How Air and Water Quality Affect Health

The quality of the air people breathe and the water they drink is essential to their overall well-being, economic prosperity, and the environment. Clean air and water play an important role in maintaining people's health, and contaminants in either one or both can impact their well-being and lead to the development of many diseases. In high enough concentrations, these contaminants can be fatal. Creating optimal healing environments requires close attention to air and water quality. The outcome of this course is for you to describe components of air and water pollution, their effects on human health, and methods of reducing or eliminating these pollutants to create healthy environments.

Lesson 2 - The Global Health Impacts Of Overpopulation

The term "overpopulation" is not a common topic of conversation between citizens or among politicians. Yet, overpopulation is now considered to be the biggest threat to the future of the planet. Because the world's population is growing at an alarming rate that has never been experienced before in history, the people here today must consider the serious health and environmental implications of continued growth. The Earth is not expanding and resources are limited. The outcome of the course is for you to explain the impact of global population growth on the health and well-being of all citizens.

Lesson 3 - Human Health and Climate Change—Is There a Connection?

Numerous independent researchers and scientists all across the world know that Earth is warming and that human activity is the primary cause. How much climate change the Earth will experience in the future is dependent on the choices people make as global citizens to reduce global emissions and reconsider their patterns of consumption. The outcome of this course is for you to provide an overview of climate change and describe the health concerns related to it.

Lesson 4 - Is Your Home Hazardous To Your Health?

While most people consider their home a place of safety, the products they use every day and the communities in which they live can be causing their health to suffer. Common everyday items and medications can prove toxic to themselves, their families, their pets, and the environment. In addition, the way their house and neighborhood are designed and built can either improve or degrade their health and the health of their communities. By knowing how your home and neighborhood can impact your health and knowing what is in your home, you can empower yourself to improve your health as well as the health of your family and your community. The outcome of this course is for you to describe common hazardous products in the home, how they impact health, and ways to reduce exposure to toxins in everyday life as well as identify how home and neighborhood design impacts health.

Cyndie Koopsen is a nurse who has cared for patients in acute care settings, community clinics, and the home. Her professional nursing career has involved nursing executive leadership and administration, staff development and education, community education and wellness, and holistic care. She has designed, developed, and presented numerous educational programs for audiences covering integrative health, promotion and wellness, and chronic disease management and prevention. She is the co-author of "Spirituality, Health, and Healing and Integrative Health: A Holistic Approach for Health Professionals."

Caroline Young, M.P.H., has an extensive public health background that includes research experience, workshop presentations, and instruction. She has designed, developed, and instructed numerous integrative health programs for diverse populations, senior populations, and faith communities. Young is the co-author of "Spirituality, Health, and Healing and Integrative Health: A Holistic Approach for Health Professionals."
