In partnership with Model Teaching, an industry leader in supporting educators, this course will help you explore the three main types of assessments—pre-assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment—and learn how to differentiate them for gifted students. Model Teaching's Mission is to Improve student performance by directly supporting teachers with quality content and resources.

The course covers the importance of different methods of assessment in education, how to use diverse assessment methods to effectively gauge and support the growth of gifted students, and the importance of differentiating the product of instruction in your class. You will also develop a plan for implementing and designing assessments, incorporating these strategies in your classroom, and ensuring that assessments foster higher-order thinking and continuously inform your instruction about your gifted students.

Details

Gifted students have special needs for instruction and benefit from increased rigor in the expectations of their assessments. This assessment models course will teach you about the three types of assessments (pre, formative, and summative) and discuss the importance of differentiating rigor, especially when assessing your gifted students.

You will learn ideas for creating tests and administering varied assessments to your students with a plan for implementation in your classroom. The course comes with 17 templates and samples to guide you in the design of your assessments and support the growth and progress of your gifted students in your classroom.

Syllabus

  1. Types of Assessments
    1. You will learn about how conducting regular formative assessments is crucial for tracking student progress and informing instruction. You will also learn about gifted students and how their growth and progress should be measured.
  2. Pre-Assessments
    1. You will learn about using pre-assessments with gifted students to help gauge their prior knowledge and guide unit planning effectively.
  3. Summative Assessments
    1. Backwards planning ensures summative assessments align with learning goals and foster higher-order thinking skills, and you will learn how you can design appropriate summative assessments for your gifted students.
  4. Formative Assessments
    1. You will learn about how regular formative assessments help monitor progress and adjust instruction to meet students' learning needs and get ideas on various ways you can assess students in the classroom.
  5. Putting it All Together
    1. Using the sample provided, you will build an assessment plan for your gifted students aligned with an upcoming unit of study.
  6. Applying What You Have Learned
    1. Get ideas on how to implement the concepts into your classroom, find a list of online resources that support gifted students and how to assess them, and read the research that supports this evidence-based professional development.

  • Email capabilities and access to a personal email account.
