What is AutoCAD and AutoCAD 3D used for?

AutoCAD is a software application developed by Autodesk to allow users to draft two- and three-dimensional models using a computer. To help you better understand, we think its practical uses can be broken down into five distinct categories including: architectural planning, engineering drafting, graphic design, 3D printing, and fashion and industrial designing. AutoCAD permits companies to virtually plan and design projects which increases productivity and lowers the cost of completing them. The most common job obtained by those who complete AutoCAD training is that of a CAD drafter which is needed in several industries including architecture, engineering, computer science, and construction.

What education do I need to become a CAD drafter?

To become a CAD drafter, you will need to obtain formal training in the use of AutoCAD through a course like this one. This course even leads to certification as an Autodesk Certified User. You may decide to further continue your education by obtaining an associate degree in drafting to open up even more opportunities in the future.

What is the average salary of an AutoCAD drafter?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not report specifically on AutoCAD drafters, but it does compile data on drafters in general. The median salary for drafters is just over $54,000 per year. Your salary will vary depending on the type of job you choose as well as your education and experience level.

Are trained AutoCAD drafters in demand?

Yes, trained AutoCAD drafters are in demand, and employment is expected to grow by 7 percent according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It notes that increased construction activity will drive up the demand for drafters, however as engineers and architects increasingly perform some of the tasks drafters traditionally preformed the job growth will be kept lower than it could have been otherwise.

Where do AutoCAD drafters work?

Drafters will spend a majority of their time in an office working in front of a computer, though some may be required to visit jobsites in order to collaborate with other industry professionals such as engineers and architects as well as clients.

What hours do AutoCAD drafters work?

Drafters will typically work full time at around 40 hours per week, however you may be asked to work overtime including later nights and weekends when important project deadlines are approaching.

What qualities should a good CAD drafter have?

In order to be a good CAD drafter, you will need to understand how to use the AutoCAD software well including commands. You will need to have good time management skills, the ability to work well under pressure, and the ability to prioritize tasks to complete multiple jobs before their specified deadlines. You will also need good organization skills and a high attention to detail. Finally, you'll need to have good communication skills as you'll be responsible for communicating with peers, supervisors, and perhaps even customers.

What type of businesses use AutoCAD and AutoCAD 3D?

There are a variety of businesses that use AutoCAD and AutoCAD 3D including those in architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, computer science, higher education, information technology, and interior design. AutoCAD is designed for people and organizations who make things, and it's trusted by millions of customers worldwide. According to iDataLabs, there are over 115,000 companies that currently use AutoCAD and most are located in the United States and in the Construction industry.
