Introduction to Windows 10

Welcome to Windows 10, the completely new operating system from Microsoft, which offers a more robust, more powerful, and completely unique computing experience. In this course, you'll gain the foundation you need to get started right away using Windows 10.

We'll begin with the basics and move on to more advanced topics. From to finding files and folders, to organizing and editing photos, to managing files on external drives, you'll learn everything you need to know about getting the most from this operating system. And since security is important, you'll also learn how to protect your files. You'll even see how to use the new Microsoft Edge browser to access the Internet. By the time you finish this course, you'll have mastered the basic skills you need to get the most from Windows 10 for both work and play.

Week 1

Learn the basics that every computer user must know in order to use a computer with minimal frustration followed by the most important skills and terminology that allow you to control what you see on your screen at all times. Then, explore the revised Start Menu and Apps in Windows 10.

Week 2

Learn about the important Control Panel window in Windows 10 and tips for using dialog boxes and those occasional mysterious dimmed options that do nothing when you click them as well as how to personalize your computer with desktop pictures, colors and sounds. Then, learn all the tricks for making typing (and editing) quick and easy, and how to save your work in files and folders, so it'll always be there when you need it!

Week 3

Learn how to use File Explorer to access all of the things you’ve saved in the past and start gaining complete mastery of your own files and folders. Then, explore two Windows 10 feature: OneDrive and Cortana. Using OneDrive, you can save your data to Microsoft servers and access that data across multiple devices. Cortana can help you find files, folders, apps, and settings on your PC as well as information on the Internet as well as provide reminders of appointments, give you current news, weather, and traffic conditions, and much more.

Week 4

Learn how to organize your photos and view them using Windows 10's Photos App as well as how to the Photo App editing tools to enhance your photos. Then, learn how to use Edge, the program that provides access to all popular websites.

Week 5

In many work and school environments, people assume you know how to manage files, and they rarely provide any details on how to accomplish things like copying, moving, or renaming files and folders. This lesson will teach you how to do these important tasks. Then, learn how to delete and recover files as well as how to copy files to and from removable media like flash drives, CDs, and DVDs.

Week 6

Learn how to use the tools and techniques that are built right into Windows to help you protect your valuable time and files. Finally, you'll learn some more techniques for protecting your computer, including using resources for free protection from viruses and spyware. And you'll discover some great timesaving tips and shortcuts, as well as resources for helping yourself so that you don't have to be so dependent on others.

Curt Simmons, B.A., M.Ed., is a best-selling author, trainer, and multi-media expert.  Curt’s degrees are in English and communication studies, and he has more than ten years of experience teaching English and writing in the classroom.  Additionally, Curt has authored numerous books on a wide variety of technology topics and has been a technical editor for numerous other titles.  He is both a classroom and online instructor and has developed custom courseware for major U.S. companies.

Introduction to Windows 10 Requirements / Prerequisites

A PC (desktop or laptop) using Microsoft Windows 10. This course does not support tablets and phones. Software must be installed and fully operational before the course begins.

Note: This course is not suitable for Macintosh users.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

How does it work?

Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Keep in mind that the interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
