Week 1

In this first lesson, it is important that you know what kind of learners you have in your class. Visual, auditory, and tactile-kinesthetic students are all going to process your lessons differently. You will learn some teaching strategies to meet each of these learning styles. Then you will discover five keys to effective vocabulary instruction, and you will find out how to start using them in your class.

Week 2

This lesson will give you some smart tips for number play to help your students understand how 1 relates to 100 or how 100 relates to 1,000. Then you will learn how to make multiplication fun with models, facts beyond tables, and real-world applications.

Week 3

In this lesson, you will learn how to connect division to life outside the classroom. Then you will look at a variety of manipulatives and models that will bring fractions to life.

Week 4

This lesson will show you how to get your math detectives thinking with some innovative problem-solving strategies. Then you will learn how to make geometry hands-on and practical. You will also learn how to get your students thinking into the future with some geometric career connections.

Week 5

This lesson will give you tips on integrating group work to maximize student learning. Then you will discover how to use journals to get your students to read, write and talk about math.

Week 6

In this final lesson, you will learn the keys to effective performance and traditional assessments that will help you understand how well you are teaching and how well your students are learning. Then you will discover strategies for involving students’ families in math from assigning the right homework to designing Family Math Nights.

Michele Thrailkill

Michele Thrailkill fell in love with math as a child and has spent the last 10 years of her teaching career making numbers fun for a diverse range of students. Eager to share her easy, inexpensive, and creative teaching strategies with others, Michele worked for a state Department of Education, where she created statewide lesson plans and evaluated Web-based material for classroom inclusion. In her spare time, she published two teachers' manuals focusing on introductory mathematics for preschool and elementary students.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits.

How does it work?

Once a course session starts, two lessons will be released each week for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

The interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes two weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The final exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the final exam has been released, you will have two weeks plus 10 days (24 days total) to complete the final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
