Take an honest look at the benefits as well as the challenges of working at home. You'll see what it takes to be an entrepreneur—and if this lifestyle will work for you. Then, focus on your talents and abilities to choose the right home-based business for you.

Week 2

Find out how to create the image that will draw customers to you and bring them back time and again. You'll get creative with names and logos, and then you'll learn how to protect your work with fictitious name statements, trademarks, copyrights, and patents. Then, explore zoning laws, licenses, permits, and insurance issues.

Week 3

Learn how to put together a step-by-step business plan. This requires thorough research into each area of your business, so plan to roll up your sleeves and get to work! Then, learn how to create a marketing plan to make your business thrive.

Week 4

Learn about the fine art of selling your product or service with the key to effective selling: Develop relationships based on trust and credibility. Then, learn about banking, record keeping, and taxes. You’ll learn about expenses and deductions, maintaining the appropriate records for all your revenue, categorizing your expenses, and keeping track of sales tax. 

Week 5

Learn how to set boundaries for your office, figure out what size office and setup you need, and make sure your office is ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing. Then, delve into getting organized. Whether you're dealing with paperwork or time management, your system of organization should not restrict or confine you in any way.

Week 6

Look at what not to do and what to do regarding your personal appearance, attitude, and printed materials. Finally, you'll learn how to protect your work and your relationships and have fun with both. It's all a matter of balance.

Helene K. Liatsos is a business advisor at the Small Business Development Center, with more than 25 years of experience. Her small business offers complete accounting and consulting services to home-based business startups. She is a QuickBooks Certified Advisor and was awarded the 2004 Home-Based Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Liatsos holds a Bachelor of Arts from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

When can I get started?

A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits.

How does it work?

Once a course session starts, two lessons will be released each week for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

The interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes two weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

What if I need an extension?

The final exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the final exam has been released, you will have two weeks plus 10 days (24 days total) to complete the final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
